Abbott's Parkinson to Retire; Three Execs to Split His Duties.(Brief Article)

ABBOTT PARK, Ill. -- Robert Parkinson Jr., president and chief operating officer of Abbott Laboratories, will retire January 31 after nearly a quarter-century with the company.

"Throughout Parkinson's long and distinguished career he has demonstrated outstanding leadership and unwavering dedication to the company, our employees and the patients we serve," says Abbott chairman and chief executive officer Miles White.

Parkinson's duties are being divided among three executives: Jeffrey Leiden, Richard Gonzalez and Joy Amundson. The new structure reflects Abbott's focus on its core concentrations of pharmaceuticals, medical products and the Ross Products unit, which focuses on Similac infant formula and other nutritional goods.

Leiden has been named executive vice president of pharmaceuticals, Gonzalez becomes executive vice president of medical products, and Amundson has been appointed Senior vice president of Ross Products. All three will report to White.

"This new leadership model is part of a long-term strategic plan to provide a strong scientific focus across our businesses," says White.

"It provides better alignment both strategically and scientifically for our core pharmaceutical businesses and at the same time provides focused leadership for our medical products businesses."
