NSW: Chubb security guards to be kicked off trains

Chubb security guards will be replaced with 500 transit officers on Sydney's trains
under a major overhaul by the New South Wales government.

StateRail will fast track the implementation of the new transit officers and will also
create 20 new 17-member transit officer patrol squads to collect intelligence on the rail
network and target known hotspots.

The move follows an interim report into StateRail's security by former NSW Police assistant
commissioner BRUCE JOHNSTON.

It found found 10 of CityRail's 306 railway stations accounted for more than half the
reported crime on stations.

Transport Minister MICHAEL COSTA says the government wants to move away from a haphazard
approach that treats every section of the railway the same.
